The Kansas City Star is reporting that two former presidents and five current employees of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers have been indicted in federal court for their alleged part in a $20-million embezzlement scheme that took place over 15 years.
The seven union officials face charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, according to the newspaper.
“As alleged in the indictment, these defendants, including two former presidents of the Boilermakers Union, enriched themselves by spending millions of dollars in union funds for their own benefit, including for salary and benefits for no-show jobs, tuition, rent, luxury international travel, meals, vacation payouts, and unauthorized loans,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri is reported as saying.
