Judge Says UAW Must Turn Over Documents

BloombergLaw.com is reporting that a federal judge has ordered the United Auto Workers to turn over text messages and other documents the union has sought to deny providing to a federal monitor.

Judge David Lawson of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan will require UAW President Shawn Fain to provide all but a limited group of documents the monitor is seeking. The monitor is investigating allegations Fain sought special favors for his fiancé when she was a UAW employee and demoted a UAW vice president when he refused to do so.

Federal monitor Neil Barofsky is also investigating whether Fain acted improperly in stripping UAW Secretary Treasurer Margaret Mock of some of her power.

The monitor has said Fain and the UAW are “delaying and obstructing” his investigation by refusing to provide documents.
