The answer is simple.
The United Autoworkers is a business and it needs more customers. Their customers are members. That’s where the money ultimately comes from.
According to the UAW’s own legal filings, the union had more than 700,000 members in 2002. The most recent reporting, in March of 2023, shows they had just 383,003.
No business can survive for long if its customer base is cut nearly in half. The union needs more members (customers) so it can collect dues from them. That’s one reason they are intent on unionizing manufacturing facilities like HMMA and others in the Southeast U.S.
But before you decide to become a customer of the UAW’s, be sure you have all of the facts. It might not be the bargain it’s cracked up to be.
