Volkswagen’s Chattanooga manufacturing site may soon face a strike action from the UAW.
The Wall Street Journal, on its editorial page, is reporting union officials are confident such a move would be supported by its members at the Chattanooga facility.
The Journal writes: “The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced last weekend that support for a strike is ‘overwhelming’ among its members at VW’s plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., based on pledge cards workers filled out before a formal vote can be called. The strike threat emerged after a year of contract talks without an agreement, though VW says it has moved a long way toward a deal.”
But some industry observers question whether the union truly has the support of its members for a risky strike action.
The newspaper points out the strike threat means VW operations could suffer major disruptions, with losses in the millions of dollars in unshipped units from even a one-week work stoppage.
