The Detroit Free Press and other news outlets are reporting that UAW Local 140 has voted unanimously to adopt a set of charges against UAW President Shawn Fain.
The newspaper reports that–in an 80-0 vote–the Warren, Michigan local became the fourth UAW local to adopt the charges. Six locals are required to send the matter to an administrative panel for trial.
Locals in Warren, Detroit, and Dubuque, Iowa have reportedly accused Fain of misconduct that could result in his removal from office, or even ouster from the union. The charges include allegations that Fain:
- Abused his authority by stripping UAW Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock of purchasing power and certain other duties of her office.
- Unfairly retaliated against Mock and Vice President Rich Boyer.
- Refused to provide relevant records requested by a court-appointed Federal monitor investigating the union as required under a consent decree.
- Bypassed established procedures by appointing individuals close to him to positions of power without the membership status required by the UAW constitution.
- Conducted himself in a manner unbecoming of an officer, an offense for which he could be removed from office.

The Federal monitor continues to investigate whether Fain stripped Boyer of powers and responsibilities after Boyer refused to go along with a scheme that would benefit the family of Fain’s fiancee.
In June, 2025, the Federal monitor said in its report that there was “compelling evidence of retaliatory and illegitimate intent” in Fain’s decision to wrongfully strip Mock of certain powers after she refused to authorize expenditures Fain was seeking for his union office.
The monitor’s role was created by a 2021 consent decree, under which the union agreed to certain terms and conditions, following a years-long scandal that sent top UAW leaders to prison.
Meanwhile, The Detroit News is reporting that a former UAW president has accused the union’s current leadership of “fear, intimidation, and retaliation.”
Ray Curry, who served as president from July, 2021 until March, 2023, is reported to be interested in reviving interest in the Reuther Administration Caucus–a group of UAW members who were the longtime ruling faction of the union.
Curry received 49.8% of the vote to Fain’s 50.2% in 2023. Fain became the first UAW President in 77 years to lack the support of the Caucus.
The next election for the union’s International Executive Board–including the office of president–will be held in June of next year. Fain has already indicated he will seek re-election to his post.
