Hyundai CEO: “We Are Bringing Tucson Hybrids to Alabama”

Every Tucson Hybrid sold in America today crosses an ocean to get here. That’s about to change.

Yellowhammer News is reporting that Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO José Muñoz said Tuesday the automaker will invest about half a billion dollars at its Alabama manufacturing facilities to build new engines, hybrid components and an extended-range electric powertrain.

“We are bringing Tucson hybrids to Alabama,” Muñoz said.

The Tucson is Hyundai’s top seller in the United States. The gas-powered Tucson is already built in Montgomery, but the hybrid version sold here today is assembled in Korea.

Muñoz made the announcement Tuesday during a fireside chat at the 2026 Automotive News Congress in Detroit.

“We have committed as part of our strategy to invest in America,” he said.

The new investment follows Hyundai’s announcement in August that the Santa Fe EREV, an extended-range electric vehicle with more than 600 miles of total range, will be built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and arrive in the first half of 2027.

HMMA is Hyundai’s first U.S. assembly plant, and its 4,200 Team Members build engines on site as well as vehicles. Hyundai invested $388 million in 2018 to build an engine head plant in Montgomery. At the time, Gov. Kay Ivey called it a testament to Hyundai’s confidence “in its highly skilled workforce.”

Asked how he wants Hyundai seen a decade from now, Muñoz said he hopes consumers will know the company for quality, safety and reliability, “but I hope we would be recognized as part of the American dream.”
