General Motors Lays Off NY Workers

A General Motors plant in Rochester, N.Y. that once employed 6,500 workers will be down to just 525 full time employees following the latest round of layoffs by the auto manufacturer, according to reports by WHAM-TV there.

The UAW Local 1097 President blames low sales of electric vehicles for the job losses. More than 70 additional workers there received pink slips last week.

The union said there is a chance some workers might find employment at another GM facility more than an hour away, in Lockport, although there are only a limited number of openings available there. Rochester workers would have a daily commute of two and a half hours to and from Lockport.
