The court-appointed federal Monitor overseeing the UAW found President Shawn Fain lied about his own Vice President, Rich Boyer, when he improperly retaliated against him.
In his sixteenth report, filed June 25, the Monitor examined the seven allegations of “dereliction of duty” Fain used to strip Boyer of his oversight of the union’s Stellantis Department in 2024.
None held up.
The report concludes Fain knew his claims were false when he put them in writing.
The real reasons Fain removed Boyer from his role? The Monitor reports Boyer settled about 200 health and safety grievances for workers, spoiling a strategy Fain kept secret, and refused an ultimatum from Fain’s to fire two of his staff.
The Monitor also found Fain abused his authority by pursuing a bonus that would benefit his fiancée and by pressing for special treatment in her sister’s workers’ compensation claim.
The report reads, in part:
“President Fain inappropriately used the powers of his office to pursue a personal matter on behalf of a family member, an abuse of his authority.”
Nearly all of the relevant text messages from the critical period were deleted from Fain’s phone.
The report marks the third time the Monitor has documented a pattern of retaliation at the top of the union.
The Monitor wrote that the evidence warrants “potential disciplinary action,” a decision he has deferred while he consults with the Justice Department.
